Touch Northern Cup lights up North Tyneside

Touch Northern Cup lights up North Tyneside

The third Touch Northern Cup may have been held on April 1st, but the participating teams were definitely no fools!!

The tournament surpassed the previous Touch Northern Cups in quality of the Touch played and number of teams entering, who ranged from first time entrants to the Harlem Globetrotter style of the eventual winners.

Eleven teams headed to the north east from as far afield as Nottingham, Manchester and Wigan, but special mention has to be made of Northumbria University and Driffield, who were both entering their first tournament.

In fact Driffield won their second game of the day, which would eventually put them into the fourth-v-fourth playoff match against their equivalent team from the other pool. They would eventually finish eight in the overall standings, one place ahead of Northumbria University, who won their own fifth-v-fifth playoff.

Among the more experienced outfits were Manchester Chargers and Hit N Run, who both finished unbeaten in the pool stages to go into the battle for first place.

The first-v-first final saw the mighty impressive Hit N Run turn on the razzle dazzle and thoroughly entertain the crowd with a Touch masterclass that showcased their players’ skills.

The third Touch Northern Cup was a huge success and gave new teams a taste of their first competition while also giving experienced teams a really competitive and fun day.

The tournament organisers give huge thanks to the full-time referees, as well as all the people who stepped up to be players refs. Special thanks to Erica Robertson and Paul Ainscough, who organised the event, as well as all the help received prior to and on the day from Percy Park Pirates.

Everyone is looking forward to the next Touch Northern Cup in August!
